CAPITOLA, Calif- A Capitola city councilman has called for a review of gun regulations in place locally for those locations selling firearms as well as for gun owners.

Councilman Dennis Norton said at Thursday night's meeting that the city council needed to re-review existing gun policies in the city, pointing out that the two largest gun suppliers in Santa Cruz County are located in Capitola.

Norton says the city needs to review what safety precautions are in place for the Capitola Mall and New Brighton Middle School, citing the shooting of 20 children in Sandy Hook, Connecticut.

When we spoke to Dennis Norton, he told us that if it is possible the city will step beyond state and federal gun regulations, if it is legal for them to do so.

Another item mentioned by Norton was hosting a 'gun turn-in' event for Santa Cruz County to bolster public safety.

Council is reviewing these items and may discuss at future meetings.
