Hero Teacher Convinces Student Gunman to Drop Shotgun

TAFT, Calif. -- Two people were injured after a shooting at  Taft Union High School Thursday morning. Authorities said a gunman opened fire at the school around 9:00 AM, and the suspect has been taken into custody.

The teen victim was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries, but in stable condition.

The 16 year old shooter has not been identified. The Kern County Sheriff's Department said the suspected shooter is believed to be a student at the school. Investigators recovered a shotgun on campus.

Teacher Ryan Heber tried to get around two dozen students out a back door, and was hit with a pellet round, that richoceted. Heber refused treatment. He and another staffer convinced the shooter to lower his weapon and surrender peacefully.

Taft Union High School is located 30 miles west of Bakersfield, CA. The city of Taft has a population of about 20,000.
