Department of Fish and Wildlife Creates Petition to List White Sharks as Threatened

Posted: Updated:

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife released a petition to list Northeast Pacific white sharks as threatened or endangered under the California Endangered Species Act.

Fish and Wildlife said there is enough sufficient scientific information about the sharks and is recommending the California Fish and Game Commission to consider the petition.

The Commission may decide to take action at their next meeting on February 6th. They could determine whether or not to accept the petition, and declare the white shark as a threatened or endangered species. Once a petition is accepted it takes a year to review before a decision on the listing is made.

The Commission meeting will be in the Natural Resources Building, First Floor Auditorium, 1416 Ninth Street, Sacramento.
