SALINAS, Calif. -- Chad Lunt has enjoyed having his kids home for the break. "It's been a great break, we've had a lot of fun," said Lunt.
Starting Monday, Lunt and other parents on the Central Coast will send their kids off back to school.
However, once the kids are in their classrooms, how safe are they?
"I don't know how well you're going to fully make it full proof as far as getting in the schools. I mean we're not sending our kids to prisons," said Lunt.
Parents tell Central Coast News that security measures like putting up fences and setting alarms help, but they know that schools can only do so much to keep intruders out.
Last month Central Coast News got a tour of a Salinas school and its measures to keep kids safe. And the district's upgrades aren't over. But Salinas City Elementary School District Assistant Superintendent, Jerry Straton knows there are limitations.
"Security is a moving target, you're never going to be done with security at one site, because of technological advancements and new idiots that will penetrate that," said Straton.
Still, the district is confident that what they have is enough.
"There is no safer place their child can be than in our schools," said Straton.
