Maurice Ainsworth Found Guilty on 52 Counts

Posted: Updated:
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A verdict has been reached for Maurice Ainsworth, the man who terrorized a Santa Cruz neighborhood and even attacked a Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Deputy.

Maurice Ainsworth was found guilty on 52 counts he faced.

Ainsworth was first arrested for a home invasion in 2008. While in custody for the case, he attacked a Santa Cruz County Sheriff's deputy at an appointment at Dominican Hospital back in November 2010 and escaped the facility.

Officers said he stole the deputy's gun and led police on a 5 hour manhunt where he terrorized a neighborhood.

Ainsworth was captured later inside a home.

Prosecutors charged Ainsworth with attempted murder, escaping from custody, resisting arrest and armed robbery.

Ainsworth's escape forced the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department to make changes to their protocol like increasing the number of deputies transporting inmates and to use a different kind of shackles.
