CARMEL, Calif.- Upon entering the Basilica Church at the Carmel Mission, visitors are usually struck by its catenary ceiling, thirty foot reredos and 5 foot thick walls.
These days you'll also notice tripods and high-tech imaging equipment.
The Basilica Church is a registered National Historic Landmark and the centerpiece of the Mission, which is under a $20 million dollar renovation. The 3D imaging being performed to restore the Carmel Mission is beginning to get worldwide attention. The Los Angeles Times featured a spread all about the research being done. CSUMB Archeological Head Ruben Mendoza said it's still safe to explore and visit.
The overall project will take several years to complete. The scanning and imaging is used to detect potential problem areas in the basilica and other historic structures. The mission is more than 200 years old.
