SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said two inmates were caught after trying to escape from the Blaine Street Women's Facility in Santa Cruz, a minimum security jail facility, on Monday night.
Deputies said Melissa Bica and Domenika Galpren climbed the security fence and walked away from the facility. Jail staff saw the inmates trying to flee and the inmates were apprehended at the 76 gas station on Ocean and Water streets minutes later.
They were housed at the main jail facility and are currently in custody.
Deputies said the facility houses inmates who've committed minor crimes, like DUI and drug offenses, not serious crimes like murder. So, for the most part, inmates are trusted to carry out their sentences.
Inmate walkouts at these facilities happen at least a couple of times a year.
And taxpayers get to pay to house them at about $31,000 per inmate a year.
Bica was housed pending placement to a treatment program. She was in custody for charges related to narcotics and stolen property.
Galpren was sentenced and serving time for charges related to auto theft.
