WASHINGTON, DC -- Plans to vote on aid for victims of Super Storm Sandy have been scrapped.
On Friday, the Senate approved a $60.4 billion measure to help with the recovery. The House appropriations Committee has drafted a smaller, $27 billion measure, and a vote had been expected before Congress' term ends Thursday at noon.
But because the House failed to act in time, and a new Congress will be sworn in Thursday, the entire legislative process will have to start over, delaying the package from disbursing money to the affected states. No word yet on when the new Congress will take up the measure.
Super Storm Sandy was blamed for at least 120 deaths and battered coastline areas as far south as North Carolina and all the way up north to Maine. Millions were left without power, and hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses were either damaged or destroyed.
