SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Save Our Shores group based out of Santa Cruz is going into the new year with a new program to clean up Central Coast beaches.
It's called the Extreme Cleanup Program. The group has been cleaning up garbage from local beaches for over 30 years. They used to just do cleanups a few times a year but more trash along the coast means they want to ramp it up.
Starting in April they're start doing extreme cleanups every month and in June they plan to do them weekly. Members from Save Our Shores said some of the beaches with the most trash are Collins Cove in Santa Cruz, Davenport in North Santa Cruz County and Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing.
Aside from scheduling more cleanups the group is also going to be working with local cities to provide education and outreach programs to get the word out about keeping the beaches clean.
Save Our Shores covers over 80 beaches and other cleanup sites. The most trash they've ever removed from one spot is 2,000 pounds.
