Thousands Continue Their Family Tradition on the Holiday

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. - Thousands of people walk through movie theater doors making Christmas day the busiest day of the year for the business.

John Bustamante and his wife chose to spend their holiday differently this year than their normal family tradition.

"My wife and I show up for the grand kids but this year, we are alone in Salinas so we thought we would come and see a movie," said Bustamante.

He said it was because of the way the holiday fell during the week this year, but what he didn't know was how busy movie theaters are today.

"I didn't think it would be this busy but I guess everybody had the same thing in mind. Its a cold day, its raining; what else are you going to do?"

For Ally Cano and her dad, they come to the movies every year on Christmas Day.

Usually, my dad and I come every Christmas to the movie theatre, and we see whatever movie comes out for Christmas," said Cano.

That's why Yesenia Urueta spends her Christmas selling popcorn and candy at the movies.

"Outside the lines have been getting pretty long, which is why we want to staff enough people so people can get in to their movies so we don't have them waiting outside for too long," explained Urueta.

She said seeing all the families have come together makes working today much better.

"Its a bummer that I'm not with my family but I do get to see all these families come together so it is nice."

But for John, he hopes next year, he and his wife can get back to the old family tradition.

"Its been kind of a lonely day without the family cause that is what we are used to cause we are the papa and the nana of the family," explained Bustamante.
