High Surf Advisory Issued For Monterey Bay

Posted: Updated:

MARINA, Calif. -- The high surf advisory issued on the Monterey Bay had people staying out of the water on Friday.

Rosemary Brantley's wandering on the beach, desite the advisory, cost her.

She and her husband dusted off the sand and dried off after getting a whip of the waves at Marina State Beach.

"We were just walking all over the dunes and got a little too close to the beach edge and my husband shouted, 'Hurry!' And I turned so quickly and I caught my foot in the sand and went down and the surf came right over me. He's been trying to strip my clothes off and shake me since," Brantley said.

For other people, like Brian Gambero and his little girl, they played it safer, staying far from the shore.

He said the surf didn't get as high as it could.

"We're used to it," he said. "When you live on the coast, in the Central Coast area, you're used to this kind of weather," he said.

Still, the National Weather Service said to expect rip currents, occassional large breakers, and run-up onto the beaches through Saturday.

"It'd be good if it was a little more sunnier. It does look like it would rain, but I don't think it will," said Sequoia Gambero, 7.

Weather officials said Saturday will not be a good surfing day, and to expect occasional large breakers with excessive run-up onto the beaches.

Beach-goers can be washed off of the beach and into the sea. Fishermen should also avoid fishing from rocks and jetties, the National Weather Service said.
