MONTEREY, Calif. -- The National Weather Service is predicting a northwest swell will impact Central Coast beaches starting Friday leading into Saturday.
NWS says there is a high surf advisory in effect until 4:00 p.m. Saturday from North Monterey Bay to South Monterey Bay and along the Big Sur Coast. Swells are expected to be 16 to 19 feet.
The weather service says surf zones will be choppy with large breaking waves and excessive run up on the beach. Beach-goers are being warned because the run up could wash people off shore and into the ocean. Fishermen are also being told to avoid fishing in areas with rocks and jetties.
Rip currents are also expected to occur which could cause some erosion to local beaches.
