SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A state review has found problems with the California State Parks Department's payroll process violated state policies, creating the risk of "abuse, fraud and overpayments."
The review by State Controller John Chiang was prompted by the disclosure earlier this year that parks officials had hidden tens of millions of dollars in two accounts. Former Parks Director Ruth Coleman resigned after the discovery and another official was fired. Governor brown named a new Parks Director last month.
Chiang's review found that managers and employees broke rules by keying in payments without proper documentation or authority. He says more than two hundred employees received improper payments totaling more than $520,000 .
A Parks Department spokesperson says they agree with the findings and are taking steps to comply with the rules. Results of more investigations into the department are expected in the coming weeks.
