SANTA CRUZ, Calif - After a white and black Cocker Spaniel with a severe infection was found tied to a pole, Santa Cruz County Humane Investigators have been looking for the owner. The Spaniel had to be put down, because of the severity of the infection.
The woman who reported that she found the dog tied up in downtown Santa Cruz with a sign that stated "homeless" was actually the dog's owner, said investigators. The woman originally took the dog to the veterinarian but they said the dog need to be euthanized because of an inoperable tumor. The owner admitted to actually making up the story about the dog being abandoned to avoid paying veterinary fees and surrender or euthanasia fees to the Shelter, said the shelter.
General Manager Melanie Sobel states, "We want to remind the public that the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is an open admission safe haven for animals that never turns any animal away that comes to its doors. We will always work with people to reduce or waive fees if they have financial hardship."
The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter operates two open admission shelters and will take in any stray, unwanted, mistreated, neglected or abandoned animal. The shelter provides emergency response to rescue sick, injured and mistreated animals twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year.
