Journalists Kidnapped in Syria Now Free

Posted: Updated:

ANTAKYA, TURKEY -- Five days after being kidnapped in Syria, NBC's Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and his production crew are free.

The team was taken prisoner Thursday at the hands of armed pro-regime gunmen. Now, the journalists are safe and unharmed in Turkey. Engel says he would quote "rather forget" the five difficult days spent in captivity in Syria.

According to NBC, Engel and his team were abducted and tossed into the back of a truck, blindfolded. On Monday, two of the captors were killed during a firefight at a checkpoint manned by a Syrian rebel group. Members of the network production team say they're happy to be out.

NBC has not identified the others held captive with Engel. The network says there was no claim of responsibility.
