President Obama Speaks at CT Memorial

Posted: Updated:

NEWTON, Ct.--The nation is grieving tonight along with the residents of Newtown, Connecticut, the site of Friday's shooting at an elementary school that left 26 people dead, 20 of them young children.

Air Force One touched down at Hartford Airport this afternoon, and then the President spoke privately with the victims' families and first responders in Newtown.

He then spoke at a memorial for the victims at Newton High School:

"We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex and that is true. No simple law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent any senseless act of violence in our society. But that's can't be an excuse for inaction. surely, we can do better than this."

Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy sat in the front row.

Some in the audience sobbed loudly when the President read the names of each of those victims..

The children of Sandy Hook Elementary will return to class Wednesday, in a temporary building.
