SALINAS, Calif.--Monterey County Sheriffs said around noon on Sunday, inmate Christopher Sorenson was released to come out of his one-person lockdown cell at the County Jail, for his daily exercise.
That's when he tried to jump from C pod's upper tier in an apparent attempt to committ suicide.
He fell onto the concrete floor 20 feet below.
He was flown to a Bay Area hospital and is expected to recover.
Sorenson is accused of kiling his 81-year old mother, Janet, last December.
He had spent several months at Atascadero State Hospital so doctors could determine whether he is competent to stand trial.
