More Local Schools Named After Role Models

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. -- The new school in Salinas to be named after Tiburcio Vasquez isn't the first one to be named after a person in history or someone who's important to the community.

Central Coast News did some digging and learned about the backgrounds of several other schools in the area and how they got their names.

Close to 20 different schools along the Central Coast are named after people. Several of them are even names after locals.

The Alisal Union School District renamed Sanborn Elementary School to Jesse G. Sanchez to honor his 12 years of service as a school board trustee who passed away from cancer in 1995.

Dr. Oscar F. Loya Elementary was named after a superintendent who also died of cancer. There's Mintie White Elementary School named after a teacher who devoted her life to teaching in Watsonville. Robert Down Elementary school in Pacific Grove was named after a principal and Walter Colton Middle School was named after Monterey's first mayor.

Other schools who stood out to us were Everett Alvarez High School named after a Navy commander who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam who was held captive for eight years.

There's also even more famous role models in history like Cesar Chavez Elementary, John Steinbeck School, and Martin Luther King Academy.
