SAN JOSE, Calif.--A shortage of breast milk at a Northern California milk bank is causing some concern.
"Mother's Milk Bank", in San Jose has a low supply of breast milk.
It is one of 10 non-profit milk banks in the country. The bank supplies milk to hospitals in 13 western states for premature babies who need the milk to survive. Mothers of premature babies often have a hard time producing milk because the babies are kept in a neonatal intensive care unit. Preemies need breast milk because it's easier on their delicate digestive systems than formula.
The milk kept at "Mother's Milk Bank" is screened, pasteurized and stored in a deep freezer for up to a year.
