TOKYO, Japan -- A 7.3 magnitude earthquake rocked northeastern Japan Friday morning, rattling buildings and jarring the nerves of residents who survived the devastating quake and tsunami in March of 2011.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was centered off Miyagi, Prefecture, the same area as the massive 9.0 trembler last year. The USGS says the earthquake hit 6.2 miles beneath the seabed. Initially, a tsunami warning had been issued for the region, but that warning has since been lifted. According to the US based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the wider Pacific Ocean.

The National Police Agency said there was no significant damage or reports of injuries. The earthquake did, however, trigger a small, three-foot tsunami that rolled onto the shore. In comparison, the March 2011 quake triggered waves of up to 32 feet, with crests of up to 98 feet.
