SALINAS, Calif. -- The elections are over and the results are in. This year, Central Caost News did something different and made a commitment to cut through the spin and the clutter and give you a chance to hear from the candidates, un-edited on our website. We called them "candidate statements." Now that the results are in, Central Coast News is holding the winners accountable.
On Thursday, the focus was the 30th State Assembly district where incumbent, Luis Alejo, received 70 percent of the vote.
His challenger, Rob Bernosky, received about 30.
Assemblyman Alejo's top priorities focused on creating jobs, ensuring access to safe drinking water, and keeping neighborhoods and communities safe.
And he said he's already making progress.
On Monday, he proposed Assembly Bill 1, which would appropriate $2 million for the Salinas Valley dealing with water contamination issues.
"This is a very critical issue for the Salinas Valley," Assemblyman Alejo said.
He also filed AB 21 to improve the water quality in other communities throughout the state.
He was recently appointed to serve as the lead chair of an Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee, so he can make recommedations on any bill having to do with water quality and the environment.
Another big priority on his plate is creating jobs here on the Central Cast by pushing for infrastructure finance districts that focuses on economic development in different communities.
"Let's say local taxes that are generated locally," he said. "Instead of sending all of that money to the state, some of that is able to stay locally so that local communities, like Salinas, can use that to attract employers to move into Salinas."
Since money is running out from the State Attorney General's office, Assemblyman Alejo is pushing for Salinas to have resources for an agency, like the California Highway Patrol, to lead and coordinate all law enfocrment agencies to fight violence and crime.
Two days ago, Central Coast News spoke with Senator Bill Monning about his priorities. County and city leaders who gave candidate statements will be next.
