SALINAS, Calif. -- The Monterey County District Attorney's Office said 59-year old Terry Allen of Salinas entered a plea in October for two felony charges of conspiracy and unlawfully purchasing electronic food stamp cards. Allen was sentenced two years in jail for his crimes.
The DA's office said Allen was paying welfare recipients money for their EBT cards. Investigators said the card holders would take money that was worth half of what was on the benefit cards.
Officers said when Allen was arrested he had five EBT cards on him that belonged to other people. Investigators believe he used about $4,412.03 worth of benefits that were not his.
In November, a judge sentenced Allen to two years in prison for EBT card violations. The judge also placed a concurrent two-year prison sentence for a second case against Allen where he was previously on probation for. His probation case was over his conviction of possessing marijuana with plans to sell it.
Allen will be serving his time in the Monterey County Jail due to the new realignment law, which started on October 1st 2011.
