SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Central Coast Assemblyman Luis Alejo is beginning the 2013-2014 Legislation Session in Sacramento. On Monday, elected officials of the California State Assembly gathered at the state Capitol to be sworn into office.
Alejo (D-Salinas) returned to the State Assembly for a second term as the representative of a new district, the 30th Assembly District. "I am very anxious to get to work during my next term," says Alejo. "I hope to make great strides in the areas of job creation, access to safe drinking water and immigration reform."
Alejo also introduced key pieces of legislation. The legislation introduced included the following:
AB 10 Minimum Wage Adjustment - This bill would address the historic income gap by increasing the state's minimum wage in increments through 2016. In 2017 and thereafter, the minimum wage would then be adjusted according to the rate of inflation.
AB 21 Small Community Safe Drinking Water Grant Fund - This bill would establish the Small Community Safe Drinking Water Grant Fund to provide immediate and emergency aid to low income communities that lack a safe source of drinking water.
AB 1 Salinas Valley Clean Water Funding - This bill would authorize the state legislature to appropriate $2 million to the Greater Monterey County Regional Water Management Group for the development of an integrated water quality and waste-water treatment program for disadvantaged communities in the Salinas Valley.
AB 60 Safe and Responsible Driver Act - Allowing eligibility for immigrants to obtain a driver's license and compliance with state law on mandatory car insurance.
AJR 3 Immigration Reform - This piece of legislation would specify principles for repairing the nation's immigration system and urge representatives in Washington D.C. to take a comprehensive and workable approach to improving the nation's immigration system using those principles.
As of Monday, Alejo's State Capitol office contact information has changed to match his district number. The new phone number is 916-319-2030, and the new fax number is 916-319-2130.
Contact information for Alejo's district office remains the same. The change is due to the redrawing of political boundaries and districts by the voter-approved California Citizens Redistricting Commission. On August 15, 2011, the Commission approved and certified the final Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly and Board of Equalization maps. These maps can be found on the Commission's website at www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov.
Luis Alejo represents the 30th District in the California State Assembly, which consists of the Salinas Valley, Monterey County, San Benito County, South Santa Clara County and the city of Watsonville in Santa Cruz County.
