UN Recognizes Palestine as a State

Posted: Updated:

UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations voted Thursday to recognize a Palestinian state. Palestine's status has now been upgraded to a nonmember observer state, with a vote of 138-9.

However, Palestine will not be truly independent until they negotiate a peace deal with the Israelis. Israel still controls the West Bank, east Jerusalem and access to Gaza.

The United States was not allowed to veto the vote, but criticized it sharply after its passing. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the decision "counterproductive" and "unfortunate."
