Three Santa Cruz County Elementary Schools Broken Into

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- "Having it attempted to be stolen and potentially damaged is disheartening," said Amy Anderson, Librarian at Mar Vista Elementary.

Anderson just got 12 brand new computers in her library.

"The last two were installed yesterday afternoon," said Anderson.

In a matter of hours, the dream of teaching her Spanish speaking kids, English, almost went out the window, literally.

"They broke the glass and reached in and opened the door," said Todd Livingstone, Principal of Mar Vista Elementary.

A library full of broken glass, chairs thrown around, and a pile of computers worth $24,000 in a tangled mess, is what the school janitor found first thing Tuesday morning.

"Something like this comes along and it kind of just blows your whole day off," said Livingstone.

The only reason why the burglars weren't able to get away with the computers was because they were all locked by a cable.

But get this, Mar Vista was just one of three elementary schools hit.

A plug is the only thing left where the $1,500 computer in the teacher's lounge at Live Oak Elementary once sat.

"The fact that a group of people would target a series of schools and steal the few resources we have is unfortunate," said Greg Stein, Principal of Live Oak Elementary.

13 miles away, at Bradley Elementary, same story, except the school had their computers locked down, so nothing was stolen.

"I don't think they think that this impacts children as young as five years old," said Anderson.

Santa Cruz Deputies ask anyone with information about the burglaries to contact the Sheriff's Department.
