Ben Lomond Family Adopts 4 Rescued Turkeys

BEN LOMOND, Calif. -- A family on the central coast receives a special delivery: Four live turkeys delivered right to their doorstep.

It's part of Farm Sanctuary's Turkey Express, an effort to rescue birds across the country from cruelty.

Turkeys may not be the traditional companions, but for Karen Oeh she couldn't have asked for more.

Four birds -- Curry, Cinnamon, Sage and Parsley -- were rescued by Farm Sanctuary.

"We want people to realize that turkeys are curious and sensitive animals, and they're not really that much different than dogs or cats," said Tara Oresick of Farm Sanctuary.

Now, they get to spend the rest of their lives with Oeh.

"It's amazing," she said. "I just can't be thankful enough that Farm Sanctuary even asked me, or called us, so it's a very special and unique gift."

In fact, Oeh said they're far more intelligent than they get credit for.

"They're very unique to watch and just interact with. They'll come and find me to see what I'm doing, so I talk to them, bring them food," she said.

And that's what Farm Sanctuary wants for the animals, to have a family that loves and cares for them.

"People often view them as food and not companion animals and here they'll be able to be companion animals and do what turkeys do and live a happy life," Oresick said.

The turkeys were brought from Farm Sanctuary's shelter in Orland.

Turkey Express is held every year around this time.
