Police, Sheriff's Helping Northridge During Holiday Shopping

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. -- Theft, shoplifting, robberies. You name it. These are all things central coast law enforcement will be keeping a close eye on during the big shopping season, just days away.

And shoppers are game.

"I think security overall concerns me," said Stephanie Henderson, shopper.

Northridge Mall is paying for supplemental outside security from not just the Salinas Police Department, but also the Monterey County Sheriff's Office to help with patrols.

Salinas Police Officer Miguel Cabrera said while the department can' t afford to add officers on the street, you likely won't miss them.

"We're not increasing our numbers," he said. "I should say we are concentrating on these areas more, so you'll see more police presence in this area during the whole holiday season."

Henderson was shopping with her daughter in Old Town salinas and, like other shoppers, she'll be making her way to Northridge to get in on some deals and said she feels safer about seeing more officers out there.

"I typically don't do that alone, but at the mall I would try to do that during the day, but I would have to say I was pleasantly surprised when I worked at Northridge last year in shoe sales. I came to realize that they have very good security knowing the insides of working there."

But even with increased patrols, some said they won't chance it .

Northridge isn't the only mall stepping up patrols.

Del Monte in Monterey said it's increasing patrols by at least double the amount.
