SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - With two battered quarterbacks, many thought that the defense would be the deciding factor between two of the top teams in the NFL. But Monday night in San Francisco, it was far from that, the 49ers beat down the Bears 32-7.
Alex Smith and Jay Cutler both sat out after suffering concussions last week. It was no mystery that Cutler would not get the start but the 49ers were hopeful that Smith would be cleared by team doctors to get the nod.
But for the 49ers, it did not seem to hurt their performance. Rookie QB, Colin Kaepernick from the University of Nevada got his first career start against a brutal Chicago Bears defense.
After the game, 49ers head coach, Jim Harbaugh told ESPN after being asked about the QB situation in the future, "I usually tend to go with the guy that has the hot hand and we have two quarterbacks that have a hot hand."
Harbaugh added that Alex Smith should not lose his starting position because of an injury but the team will have to decide after he is cleared to play.
