Black Friday isn't what it used to be. A new survey finds the best deals on holiday gifts are often found before the un-official start to the holiday shopping season.  So, to buy or not to buy?

Tons of ads are coming out in the days leading up to Black Friday and we've been looking through all of them. We found that sometimes the best deal on some merchandise isn't found on Black Friday. We talked with the VP Marketing of Decide.com who recently released a new information about shopping trends. "A common misconception is that Black Friday is a great time to buy across categories. Really that's not the case. Only 30% of products that we looked at as far as doorbusters were actually a good deal on Black Friday," said Shauana Causey.

Decide.com researched buying trends over the last six years and found that certain products are cheaper at different times of the year. They found that high end luxury items are less expensive earlier in the year while laptops seem to get cheaper, later in the holiday season. So if you wait until December, you could save $50 on a Sony laptop or $80 on a Samsung model. Also buying online is cheaper. So what are the best products to buy at their lowest priced? "On Black Friday the best deals that can be found are on video game consoles, anything videogame related is a great deal on Black Friday. Also home fitness equipment is a fantastic deal on Black Friday," said Causey.

One trend that still seems to stay the same is getting the best deals when you're the first in line or first online. The Ship It To Me CEO said timing is also very important when it comes to finding good deals. "The best time to shop online is usually really early in the morning. The retailers particularly online will put their sales up first thing in the morning, that's how most of the retailers work. That's when the most inventory goes out and that's when the price first changes," said Charlie Graham.
