It's not your average petition. The petition asks the Obama Administration to peacefully grant California to withdraw from the US and create its own new government
"You have to smile," said political expert, Dr. David Anderson, after seeing the petition.
Dr. Anderson said the petition is nothing more than a protest against the federal government.
"You have to understand people get frustrated. It's a very dramatic move," said Dr. Anderson.
Dramatic but popular. The petition needs 25,000 signatures to get a response from the White House, Thursday morning it had under 13,000 and during the day that number grew to 13,600.
California isn't the only state that wants out, all 50 states have the same petition. Texas already has more than 100,000 signatures.
But will it work?
Dr. Anderson said its impossible
"They are petitioning President Obama to give permission to leave. The president can't do that. The president has no power to dissolve the US or say you're excused you may leave now," said Dr. Anderson.
Dr. Anderson said these kind of protest gain momentum after elections. People are not happy with results and want out. But he said those signing these petitions aren't thinking things through
"If California was not part of the US, all of a sudden your Medicare card would be invalid, your social security would stop," said Dr. Anderson.
The petition is symbolic. Its all part of the President Obama's "We the people" initiative, which was launched in 2011 to give citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard by the administration.
