SALINAS, Calif.- Central Coast News has confirmed that the Office of the Inspector General is investigating a local Salinas medical facility. Salinas Valley Urology Associates allows patients to be diagnosed and treated at the same location.
Salinas Valley Urology Associates said it's the only place on the central coast using an advanced radiation system called RapidArc, to perform intensity modulated radiation therapy-or IMRT, on it's prostate patients.
Recently, Bloomberg.com posted an article and video reporting that some patients being treated at the facility believed they were receiving treatments that were unnecessary.
We contacted SVUA three times to request an on camera interview. Each time they refused.
On Wednesday, they did issue this statement saying in part: "The physicians and staff of Salinas Valley Urology Associates along with participating physicians were surprised and disappointed to read the misleading story on bloombergnews.com, which was largely repeated by the local press, criticizing the care we provide our patients." The statement went on to say: "All of our patients who require medical treatment are fully informed of their treatment options. Decisions regarding medical therapy are entirely their own."
The full statement from Salinas Valley Urology Associates is attached to this story. In the meantime we will continue to track the Inspector General's investigation and let you know the outcome.
