A Mother's Fight for Camila's Cure

Posted: Updated:

SEASIDE, Calif. -- She's a mom on a mission to save her daughter's life.

"Without a bone marrow transplant my daughter will die," said Robin De La Llata.

De La Llata's daughter Camila was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia in August and doctors said chemo can't save her. The only thing that can is a bone marrow transplant.

But here's the tricky part, Camila is biracial, Hispanic and white, and in order for it be a match, the donor must also be biracial.

"My daughters on a timer and I know they will be willing to help if they just heard her story," said De La Llata.

So, Tuesday that's what the CSUMP student group "Voices" and volunteers did. They got students, especially biracial students, to register as donors.  All people had to do at the drive was give a cheek swab that's being sent to a lab.

"I hug everyone of them and tell them they have a mother's gratitude," said De La Llata.

But it goes beyond Camila, the group's goal is also to increase the number of Hispanics registered as donors. Right now only 3% of the 9 million people registered are Hispanic.

Every swab, registration and hug, for De La Llata, it's one step closer to Camila's cure.

"A doctor can't save her life maybe one of you can," said De La Llata.
