SALINAS, Calif. -- Police are searching for the man who tried to rob a CVS pharmacy in Salinas of cough syrup Monday night.

It happened just before 8pm at the CVS Drugstore on East Laurel Drive.

Police say a customer approached the pharmacy counter and handed the employee a note demanding prescription strength cough syrup. In the note, police say the suspect also threatened to shoot the employee if she did not comply with his request.

When the employee turned to show another co-worker the note, police say the suspect jumped over the counter and grabbed a bottle of the cough syrup. Another employee yelled at the suspect, and that's when the man jumped back over the counter, fleeing on foot without the medicine.

Police describe the suspect at an African-American male, about 30 years old, 5'10" and 130 pounds. He had dreadlocks, wore a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans.
