FRIDAY UPDATE 12:30PM -- Monterey County Sheriffs confirm to Central Coast News an 18 hour standoff in Aromas has ended peacefully. Deputies say 3 rifles, and a one caliber handgun were found during the search of the home. Officers say they do not think drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
Deputies say the suspect identified as Jacqueline Burse-Woodard, voluntarily gave up and was taken in to custody. Police told Central Coast News the woman is in jail right now and faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, and making terrorist threats.
Classes at Aromas School were canceled today because of the standoff. Reverse 911 calls were made to parents, asking them NOT to bring their kids to school. The standoff finally ended around 7:00 a.m.
The standoff started on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. and lasted 0ver 18 hours. Deputies said they got a tip that a person was barricaded in a home with loaded weapons. The Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies, SWAT Team, Hostage Negotiation Team, American Medical Response and CHP were all on scene at Bardue Street negotiating with the woman.
The entire neighborhood was told to evacuate from the area. The Red Cross was on scene last night and set up about 30-40 cots at the Aromas School gym for neighbors who had to be evacuated from the street. The Red Cross also provided food and blankets for neighbors who needed a place to stay.
The suspect's friend Nakia Hardy told Central Coast News, "she's very smart and reasonable young lady, and I can't see that there's any harm that's come to her, for her to react this way."
