Thriving Salinas Theatre Nothing To Do With Occupy Protest

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif.- Occupy Monterey Peninsula tried to hold a rally at a foreclosure auction last week in Oldtown Salinas at the Fox Theatre, but the building's owners told Central Coast News the protestors left quickly after police were called.

The Fox Theater on Main Street in Salinas is used as the auction site. An auction company rents the spacious building to hold its public auctions. Theatre managers said the protestors came since it was public, but left within minutes. Salinas police were called to keep the peace.

The old, classic theatre is a busy place, used as a hot spot for banquets and concerts. The owners, the Lane brothers, said there was confusion as to why the Occupy protestors were holding a rally in the first place and for whom.

Occupy protestors in a news release said foreclosures have damaged local communities and they were going to support a local resident facing foreclosure. Occupy Monterey said they want to demonstrate the need to have an immediate action to halt foreclosures.

Occupy Monterey said the cost of the foreclosure crisis in Monterey County from 2008-2012 is nearly a loss of $9 billion in home values, as there's been 20,380 total foreclosures.
