SEASIDE, Calif. -- Hundreds of millions of dollars to save California schools. Prop 30, touted as the savior of California's education woes, will help give under-funded schools some budget relief.
Relief is coming to California State University students who've dealt with a steady increase in tuition hikes.
They'll be getting refunded for a tuition increase they paid starting this fall semester.
That's a $249 per semester increase that they'll be getting back.
For returning students, they'll likely get a credit that will be issued for spring tuition, while former students will have a refund sent to them.
CSU said each campus is in charge of how the money will be distributed.
Cal State Monterey Bay said it still doesn't have a plan on how it will do it.
CSU officials said there's no direct funding going toward the system's budget this year, but next school year the state will add $125 million in supplemental funding that comes from the income tax generated from Prop 30.
But while this all sounds good, Prop 30 doesn't guarantee fee hikes won't happen in the near future.
CSU said it all depends on how much state funding it gets, and it won't know that until January when next year's budget proposal comes out.
