Do Picket Lines Get Things Done?

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. -- The chants, the honking, the signs. You can read it on their signs, Nob Hill workers want their benefits back and they aren't going to stop until they get them back.

"There's this question with unions during hard times, are they being selfish?" said Dr. David Anderson, Central Coast Political Expert.

Anderson said there are two ways the public looks at picket lines. They can either be sympathetic or find them to be unfair.

"The controversy comes up when the non-union workers think the union is somehow hurting their opportunity or their position to get their benefits paid or jobs themselves," said Anderson.

But Anderson said union activity in California is affective, and that is evident after Prop 32 just passed. He also said that when companies like Nob Hill cut benefits its usually because they are trying to stay competitive with big stores like Walmart and Costco.

"These smaller companies, they are in a very precarious economic position," said Anderson.

Anderson said its a trickle down effect and unions should be careful because they are walking a fine line.

"You have the company and employees both at risk with the economy and its high stakes for both sides. Thats why you get the high tensions," said Anderson.
