Maryland and Maine approve same-sex marriage and more states could follow suit when all of the ballots are counted.
In Maryland, the vote was close. Voters approved gay marriage with 52% of the vote. In Maine, same-sex marriage passed with 54% of the vote. More women voted than men in that state, and they strongly supported gay marriage.
Voters under the age of thirty backed same-sex marriage by a margin of more than two-to-one. The strongest opposition to the question came from voters age sixty-five and older.
