SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- If you plan on voting in Santa Cruz County, you may see a kid voting at the booth right next to you tomorrow. It's part of the "Kids Can Vote" program. The Santa Cruz County Elections Department is offering kids as young as Kindergarten a chance to go to the polls and vote.
Their ballots have real candidate races and varies on propositions depending on the kid's age. The goal is to use this election as not only a learning tool for teachers but also makes voting more of a family experience.
"You have kids saying, 'Mommy, Mommy, take me to the polling sites, I want to vote today,' and you end up having children encourage parents to participate in democracy," said Justin Trinh-Halperin.
All 140 polling sites in Santa Cruz are participating. Ballots from the kid's votes will be tallied and results will be posted on votescount.com. Any kid in Santa Cruz County can vote if accompanied by an adult.
