SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Forgot to add the extra stamp on your mail-in ballot? Don't worry the Election's Office has got you covered.
"All election mail comes through regardless of postage. We will pay the insufficient postage," said Gail Pellerin, Santa Cruz County Elections.
The Elections Department budget sets aside an amount that covers the cost of mail-in ballots that don't have proper postage. For each election the office meets with postal service reps to determine how much the ballots will weigh out.
This year, in Santa Cruz County the postage is 45 cents, in Monterey County it is 65 cents because there are more races on that ballot.
The Santa Cruz Elections Office has already seen ballots with double stamps and heard reports that some post offices in Santa Cruz County are still charging people a little extra, and it doesn't know why.
The Elections Department said if voters want to avoid worrying about the postage, then the best way to turn in the ballot is to drop off the ballot in person.
The Elections Office sees plenty of ballots with two stamps, one stamp and some don't have any at all. But as long as the ballot makes it to the elections department by 8pm Tuesday, it will count.
