SALINAS, Calif. - Salinas Police have arrested the man they say locked himself up in a bathroom all day while being combative and destructive in a home on Newport Court.
The man has been identified as 61-year-old Pablo Silva. Police say he assaulted his 77-year-old girlfriend shortly before 9:30 Thursday morning, before she escaped to a neighbor's house. When officers arrived, the victim gave the officers the key to the house. That's when officers found Silva barricaded in a bathroom with water flowing out from under the door.
Police say he was yelling profanities and destroying the inside of the bathroom with what sounded like a crow bar. Several hours of negotiations went on with the assistance of Monterey County Behavior Health. As this situation digressed and additional resources were needed, the Salinas Police Department's SWAT Team was called to the scene.
Eventually Silva was taken into custody around 3:30 p.m. after resisting the officers' attempts to peacefully take him into custody. Silva was not injured and he was lodged into the Monterey County Jail on several charges.
No nearby homes were evacuated but officers closed off the area, just as a precaution.
