The National Fire Protection Association says more than 1,000 homes are burned every year because of Halloween lights. In an effort to bring down that number, the California Department of Forestry is sending out information on how to keep your home safe.
Decorations around the home should be considered carefully. Cal Fire says not to use actual candles in jack-o-lanterns, light them with a battery powered light. Tell children to stay away from open flames. Make sure they know the stop, drop and roll procedure if their clothing catches fire.
Dried flowers, cornstalks and other papers are extremely flammable. They need to be kept away from open flames, light bulbs and heaters. Exits should always be clear so people can exit a building quickly in case there is an emergency.
Other Trick-or-Treating Tips:
When it comes to costumes, try to purchase flame resistant material. Wear reflective tape on Halloween costumes so you can be seen more easily. Makeup may be a better alternative to wearing masks because masks can get in the way of you seeing clearly. Try not to wear long trailing fabric, loose clothing or baggy sleeves.
When out trick-or-treating make sure you are with a responsible adult. Be aware of people driving through neighborhoods if you are walking, and if you are driving keep an eye out for small children trick-or-treating. Tell children to be careful if they are walking around with props that could be sharp or dangerous.
Be sure to inspect ALL candy before consumption. Report to police if anything seems suspicious.
