Central Coast Assists With Superstorm Sandy

Posted: Updated:

More than one hundred California Air Guardsmen and woman are on their way to the East Coast from Mountain View, California just north of Monterey to assist with Superstorm Sandy, but the help doesn't land there.

"In regards to the strength of the storm and the number of people they anticipate it impacting, we do feel we will be called upon to deliver emergency assistance," says Damon Taugher, Director of Direct Relief USA.

Damon Taugher works for Direct Relief USA and says millions of dollars of inventory packed in their warehouse could be shipped out any day. Personal care packages are already ready to be sent out. The bags are filled with items we take for granted everyday, items like band aids, toothbrushes and lotion.

Central Coast American Red Cross volunteer, Eleanor Guzik is already in Pennsylvania and says she's never seen anything like this before.

"Big, big winds..very big, I would say 78 miles per hour..the rains are much heavier than I have ever seen where we live," says Guzik.

As storm conditions get uglier, Guzik says her work there doesn't stop.

"They call us when they have conditions or problems they don't know how to tackle..since we've been to the hotel we've had a total of 10 phone calls," says Guzik.

Guzik says if the storm doesn't subside she could be there for weeks. According to Direct Relief USA, typically hurricane season starts in June and ends by November, so they say Superstorm Sandy is very late in the season.
