Sandy Downgraded: Famed Atlantic City Boardwalk Mostly Destroyed

Atlantic City, NJ - Hurricane Sandy is no more. But do let that fool you. As of 7pm EDT the National Weather Service has officially downgraded Sandy to a 'post tropical cyclone' which is the technical name for a super storm.

Hurricane Sandy made landfall at about 6 pm EDT Monday smashing the New Jersey coastline with an estimated 7 to 12 foot storm surge. One notable landmark the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk was destroyed, six to eight blocks of it pounded into pieces by a relentless and powerful surf.

As to the winds...the maximum winds have decreased slightly and are near 85 miles per hour. The NWS reports that a wind gust to 82 mph was recently reported at the Islip, New York. A sustained wind of 45 mph with a gust to 67 mph was recently reported at JFK International Airport in New York.
