CAL FIRE Loses One of Their Own on Duty

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - CAL FIRE announced on Sunday the passing of one of their own while on duty on the Central Coast. Battalion Chief Robert van Wormer from the Santa Clara county passed away in Santa Cruz Saturday night.

Van Wormer was on assignment Saturday evening when he lost consciousness. He was immediately transported to Dominican Hospital, where multiple attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He passed away around 8 p.m. at the hospital.

Van Wormer's wife and two kids were brought to Santa Cruz, where they met van Wormer's parents and sister. Kirk van Wormer, Robert's brother, is a Battalion Chief for CAL FIRE's Sonoma Lake-Napa Unit.

CAL FIRE director, Ken Pimlott, released a statement Sunday saying:

"This is a huge loss for Rob's family, his many friends, his CAL FIRE family and the fire service as a whole. Please join me in keeping the Van Wormer family in your thoughts during this very difficult time."

All CAL FIRE facilities will lower flags to half staff and all uniform personnel will shroud badges until the fallen firefighter is laid to rest.

Memorial services have not been released at this time.
