PACIFIC GROVE, Calif- The Grinch stole Halloween for one Central Coast neighborhood. The famed Candy Cane Lane in Pacific Grove is in the dark, and neighbors worry it may be a little too spooky for some trick-or-treaters next week. We went to the neighborhood where people are taking matters into their own hands to make it safe.
Come hallows eve, neighbors said more than a thousand trick-or-treaters and their parents will flood these streets. Dubbed Candy Cane Lane for its famous transformation during the holidays, people living there welcome all the attention with open arms.
"We open up our neighborhood to the entire world when it comes to Halloween and Christmas," said concerned parent Julia Miller.
But they said a few years ago, every single one of the old historic street lamps went dark and the city said the electrical system is too expensive to fix. Parents said they worry if someone goes running down steps in the dark, or running down the sidewalk that they'll trip and hurt them self because these lights aren't on. Right now all trick-or-treaters will have to follow are the decorative lights on the homes and neighbors said that's not safe.
"We have a lot of things that are sticking out as part of the decorations and people seem to feel free to just tromp all over the yard and run around. Without lighting, you know it's easy to trip over a cord," said concerned parent Frank Holsworth.
We called the City of Pacific Grove to find out if it has any plans to fix the street lamps, but we're still waiting to hear back.
