12-year-old Boy: "I was mad at the dog, so I killed it"

SALINAS, Calif. - Salinas Police are investigating a disturbing case of animal abuse that turned deadly Friday afternoon.  Just after 4:00 p.m., officers found a deceased dog hung from a bedroom door handle by it's collar.

It happened at the Tynman Apartments Complex on the 300 block of Front Street. Officers say it started as a 911 hangup call, followed by a welfare check. The call taker heard a female say "he's hurting the dog" as she was struggling with someone on the phone.  The phone then hung up.

When they arrived at the apartment, the occupant would not open the door.  Once inside, they found the 12-pound terrier mix dog hanging from the bedroom door handle.  It was already dead.

A 12-year-old Hispanic male juvenile came out of the same bedroom and was detained by officers.

He told officers, "I was mad at the dog, so I killed it".  He also said he wanted to see the dog die.

Officers say that 12-year-old boy showed no remorse for his behavior.

The boy does not have any prior criminal behavior.  He was booked in the Monterey County Juvenile Hall for Felony Cruelty to an Animal.
