HOLLISTER, Calif. - The Hollister Police Department arrested 33-year-old Michael Angel Barrientos Tuesday for weapons and drug charges after he led police in a foot race through a downtown Hollister neighborhood.
At about 6:00 pm, Officer Luis Toribio was driving his vehicle on Sally Street near Hawkins Street when he noticed a man walking in the opposite direction. The man tried to hide his face by looking away from Officer Toribio as he drove by. Based on the recent crime activity in the area, Officer Toribio decided to stop and talk with the man.
Officer Toribio stopped his vehicle and began to approach the man. He asked the man if he could talk with him for a moment. The man did not respond and began to run away while reaching into his waistband. Officer Toribio decided to run alongside the man and at one point asked him why he was running. This went on for several blocks until the man was too tired to continue running and stopped to catch his breath.
He yelled at Officer Toribio, "You can't stop me," and then he started running again. Officer Toribio then watched as the man removed a fixed blade knife from his waistband and tossed it to the ground.
Seeing the felony violation of carrying a concealed weapon committed in his presence, Officer Toribio then ordered the man to stop. The man was too tired to continue and Officer Toribio placed the man under arrest without incident.
A search after the arrest revealed the man was also in possession of methamphetamine and marijuana. He was transported to the San Benito County Jail where he was booked for possession of a controlled substance, possession of a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana and violation of probation.
