SANTA CRUZ, Calif.-- A woman gave birth to a baby girl while she was being escorted out of the Santa Cruz County Jail lobby. The child was delivered by jail staff.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff's deputies say it happened early Monday afternoon. The 29 year old Clearlake woman had been booked into the jail earlier that day for public intoxication. Correctional staff quickly called the jail's medical team who helped comfort the woman while she gave birth to the baby girl.
Both the mother and newborn child were taken to Dominican Hospital for care. Deputies say since medical staff from the jail were able to help the woman very quickly, less complications were likely to have happened for the birth of the premature baby.
