CARMEL, Calif. -- More than 200 bicyclists are arriving in Carmel on Monday as part of their 450 mile bike ride along the California Coast.
The ride is part of a seven-day drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Several bicyclists, including injured veterans will be out in full force. The Ride 2 Recovery Golden State Challenge is sponsored by UnitedHealthcare.
Ride 2 Recovery provides a variety of rehabilitation programs for veterans, and uses cycling as their #1 activity. Other programs include physical and psychological rehabilitation, indoor spinning training and long distance rides.
The organization says the training helps injured veterans heal by challenging them to travel long distances on their bikes. People are encouraged to gather near the bike routes to show support.
Most of the riders will be leaving Santa Cruz on Monday around 9:00 a.m. They are expected to arrive in Moss Landing, Seaside and Carmel in the afternoon between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Riders will leave Carmel for their next destination early Tuesday morning.
